New Perspective at Hilton Easton

I joined the hospitality community in 2012. The Hilton Columbus at Easton that I always knew was something out of a Southern inspired movie or novel. Driving up to the stately white and brick building that sat nestled within Easton Town Center and stepping inside to beautiful draperies, brass and gold, floral prints, and a spectrum of colors is what I remember. From the outside everything is seemingly the same and pristine as ever. Once you walk through the doors, a very sophisticated modern story unfolds. Through the front doors and into the main lobby we go! Ah, what a space! The front desk, soft seating (and a lot of it – there is also extensive outdoor patio seating available), and the bar and lounge is wonderfully welcoming and simply put… stunning! Lovely shades of gray with accents of chartreuse green and purple hues make a great combination.

I have a few blog posts under my belt now, and I am sure you have learned, I love light fixtures. Throughout the lobby and pre-function spaces shiny silver and crystal-like shapes draw your attention. They truly make the spaces and they are unique! Hilton Easton - Columbus, OH

I also love food and am all-in for the new concept being offered, Herb-n-Kitchen. Serving Starbucks beverages, an array of freshly crafted salads, sandwiches, & flatbreads, and all the market snacks to go along with it (inclusive of Jeni’s Ice Cream pints!). Don’t worry, you can still order delicious menu options in the lounge along with your favorite cocktail (try the cucumber mint mule!).

It is easy to see that this was a renovation of intent, an intent to make the guest experience enjoyable and easy. Next time you are at Easton Town Center be sure to visit the Hilton and see it for yourself!

Summer is Here!

When you’ve spent lots and lots of time inside changing diapers and working on organized tummy time on a proper flat surface, it makes you jump at a chance to hang out with adults doing adult things, like tapas and summer cocktails at a rooftop bar.

Enter, VASO.

VASO @ AC Hotel Dublin If you’re totally behind the times, Ohio recently got its second and third AC Hotels, in Dublin and Cincinnati. VASO is the new rooftop bar and restaurant at Dublin’s swanky AC Hotel. This property is located in the new Bridge Park Development, situated at the busy intersection of US 33 (Riverside Drive) and Rt. 161 (W Dublin-Granville Road). From my experience, ACs seem to be popping up in areas just like this – new, hip developments that need a stylish hotel to anchor a development of unique local restaurants, shopping and entertainment. When you enter the hotel, it’s a full sensory experience. The art and decor is fun to look at, it smells heavenly (AC branded scent – rumor has it there is a new one coming soon!), the beautiful floor to ceiling bar straight ahead

makes you crave a handcrafted cocktail before you even make it through the threshold and you can hear the buzz of conversation from the open lobby concept, offering cozy places to have private conversations or quick business meetings. Once you make it past the lobby, you head to a separate entrance for the exclusive rooftop bar… So let’s go.

I’ve only been in 3 AC Hotels, but all of them have a cool outdoor experience. The rooftop bar concept is taking Columbus by storm, but fortunately VASO got in and set the bar high from the start. The glass elevator sweeps guests up to the 8th floor where you’re greeted by a friendly host, who is hoping you have a reservation, because my guess is walk-in availability is slim here. We were visiting on a Sunday evening after the Muirfield Memorial Golf Tournament which brings in celebs like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson. Needless to say, the place was PACKED. Luckily, we made reservations about a month in advance (totally not necessary, we were just busy having a baby so you know, options are limited). Once you can look past the number of people who also thought a rooftop bar in the summer would be a good idea, you see that amazing view.

VASO is serving up Spanish-style tapas and handcrafted cocktails. Our group ordered the San Jacabo (waitress recommendation and my favorite), Patatas Bravas, Albóndigas de Cordero, Ceviche de Vieiras and Ensalada de brotes de Bruselas. Of course, no meal would be complete without dessert. I had the Torta de Santiago, but honestly, TJ’s Torta de toffee y dátiles was absolutely amazing.

VASO @ AC Hotel Dublin Whether you sit inside or out, guests can enjoy the tapas menu with impressive views, cool music and delicious cocktails. If you haven’t been yet, I highly recommend a visit. If you’re there on a Thursday-Saturday, there is a dress code. Kind of old school, but I like it. Embrace the exclusivity, because at this rooftop bar, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world. And why not make a night out of it an enjoy the accommodations at the AC Hotel Dublin?

Take Me to The Summit!

As I left my car with valet, I turned to face the property and I was able to get my first peek inside this new gem. I was quickly drawn to the bright colors in front of me; a wall of what looked to be carefully placed paint strokes and splatters in an array of colorful notes. I soon realized that art is a key feature throughout the hotel.

In front of the accent wall, a gold metal staircase twisted its way up to the next floor. Hanging down the center is a light fixture of bare light bulbs with the black cords exposed. I had the opportunity to meet with a team member who explained to me that the original structure of the hotel was derived from the Rainbow Parking Garage. The gold staircase I referenced? Original to the garage! In the main atrium and throughout the property exposed cement beams support the open space. The Rainbow Garage was colorful, and there are tributes to the rainbow throughout the hotel.

The Summit, A Dolce Hotel - Cincinnati, OH Off of the main lobby there is a large art exhibition room. The focal point of the space is a standing, circular, structure that has video boards around the inside, and if you stand in the middle you feel you are a part of the movement.

The Summit, A Dolce Hotel - Cincinnati, OH Walking through the hotel, I couldn’t help but to take a minute to have a seat in one of the many lounge areas. Everything is artfully placed by mixing colors, textures, lighting, and of course, pieces of art! The seating areas are inviting, and you feel there is a greater community vibe in the air.

Now, let’s talk about food. The Market offered a full variety of options from several hot selections, to locally sourced cheeses, and a variety of fresh options like fruits and greens. My personal favorite… drum roll please… the gelato bar! A selection of local gelato flavors and quite a mix of toppings. Though the other dining option was not open yet, I got to have a sneak peek of the beautiful Overlook Kitchen and Bar. Let’s just say, it’s on my list to try out next time I am in the area. Last, but certainly not least, the sleeping rooms did not disappoint. As I walked in, the colors and décor rejuvenated me. The fun wallpaper, area rug, and furniture just made the room pop. One of my favorite features was the in-room safe. I know what you are thinking, I am a nerd, but hear me out… An ENTIRE drawer served as the safe within the greater dresser. Ladies, my WHOLE purse, laptop, jewelry, etc. fit! The Summit, A Dolce Hotel - Cincinnati, OH

This visit was my first visit to a Dolce brand of hotel and I am totally loving it! If you are in the area, stop by for a bite or explore the art exhibits throughout the hotel. A quick visit to this vibrant location will have you singing a happier tune.

Serenity in Victorian Village

Victorian Village Guest House - Columbus, OH As I walked away from my car and towards the timeless brick home, I immediately felt at ease. I opened the black iron gate to allow myself up the steps and to the brick sidewalk that wrapped around the home (the Guest House sits in the rear lawn of the beautiful 1800’s brick home where the owners reside). Speaking of the owners, I was warmly greeted by Lisa, and was so excited to have the opportunity to relax in this urban oasis. Victorian Village Guest House - Columbus, OH

Lisa walked me to the Guest House which stood at the opposite side of the lawn and is so charming. As I turned the corner, I was completely taken away by the perfectly manicured flower beds and ever so green grass. If you could live inside of the Spring season, this is where you’d want to be.

I opened the door and headed up the steps which opened into a large, open, lofted space with vaulted ceilings. Everything had a rich ruby red color incorporated into it. The bathroom; all red! Such a beautiful color to accent the neutral walls and furniture.

Sitting on the counter top was a sweet treat (from one of my favorite bakeries, Pistachio Vera) and a welcome card from the hosts (so kind!).

I dropped my bag and grabbed a book immediately as it just felt right. I appreciated the serenity and peacefulness of this location. It was so quiet! I casually came and went from my lofted space to the outdoor seating. Victorian Village Guest House - Columbus, OH

As the sun began to set, it was time to settle in and head to bed (the oh-so comfy bed!). I pulled down the woven window shades, prepared a cup of hot tea in the kitchen, grabbed my sweet welcome treat, and settled in for a peaceful night’s rest. Victorian Village Guest House - Columbus, OH

What a great stay! Now I am thinking ahead… this would be an ideal location to stay for an Ohio State home game!

Courtyard Cool

My travels this week have taken me to Akron, Ohio. Throw everything you thought you knew about the Courtyard by Marriott brand and come read about my trip to the Courtyard by Marriott Akron Downtown. Let’s go…

Courtyard Akron The hotel sits comfortably within the Northside District of downtown Akron. As I got out of my car, I couldn’t help but to take time and look around their immediate area. Just steps from the hotel was a pizza shop, a clay and art studio, an ultra-modern restaurant and a few other establishments I would have loved to explore.

As I approached the entryway I couldn’t help but to look to the left at a black door that read “Apothecary”. This door led to the Northside Speakeasy, a Prohibition Era styled bar. (I mean, this is pretty cool…) Courtyard Akron

I finally made my way into the lobby area. It felt extremely inviting and had the classic comfort the Courtyard brand is known for. The flooring, wall vinyl, pillows all coordinated effortlessly and gave a very “cool” feel. Within the Bistro area, chic crystal light fixtures hung over large seating areas (I would love to have one for my home, please!). One item stuck out the most, an old world red telephone booth stood tall in the corner of the Bistro. What a fun addition! Another aspect, I thoroughly enjoyed about this property is the recognition of Akron through black and white photos highlighting key Akron sites.

As I walked through I saw brief glimpses of the Little Cuyahoga River and the Cuyahoga Valley. Also, interesting was the train stop just out back of the hotel offering easy access for guests like me to get around. The train stop was charming with a pale-yellow pavilion to wait under between trains.

Now, I saved the best part for last, the hotel has its’ own MOVIE THEATRE. This is not a drill; I walked into a large theatre screen, oversized black leather recliners, and the perfect lighting for a movie. This is something I could get used to! Can you imagine coming back to your hotel from a long day of work and you could immediately grab your favorite recliner to sit back, relax, and enjoy a movie? Courtyard Akron

I did not have the opportunity to spend the night at this property, but gosh, I sure wish I did! For now, I am going to contemplate how I get the light fixture and movie theatre into my house.

Residence InnLove

Residence Inn Columbus Downtown Now this property, Residence Inn by Marriott Columbus Downtown, has a little piece of my heart. Not because of its’ stunning architecture, interesting history, or timeless bourbon bar, but I worked here for a large portion of my career. It was such a pleasure to work in a historical building and interact with the guests that had visited throughout the years. I wanted to go visit and share a day with you at this hotel.

Residence Inn by Marriott Columbus Downtown Walking into this property my eyes are always immediately drawn to the original columns that lead to a ceiling that is a work of art. What makes this property an architectural gem? It is located within the 1927 Buckeye Savings and Loans Building in the bustling Gay Street District. Remnants of the bank that once existed here showcase the property’s history and add charm to this modern aged hotel.

One of my favorite pieces in the hotel is the original blueprint of the bank which you’d find at the rear of the lobby. From the US Postal Mailbox and chute, to the clusters of security deposit boxes, to the one feature I find most unique…the breakfast buffet that is served from within the original bank vault (it is not everyday you get to see an actual vault door!).

Residence Inn by Marriott Columbus Downtown I worked my way through the lobby and into the elevator banks. Above each elevator the engraved marble maintains the original Buckeye Savings & Loans emblem and an arched hand-painted ceiling. I enjoyed my suite, as it was spacious and had a full kitchen. Not to say, the big windows allowed a lot of natural light into the room, which I am always a sucker for. Even as I walked through the hallways, there were architectural elements around every corner, the floor I stayed on had beautiful exposed beams.

As I walked downstairs that evening to partake in food and drink at Buckeye Bourbon House (the bar & lounge located within the lobby), one thing was evident; what a transformation from morning to night! Fun fact: Buckeye Bourbon House now stands where the original teller stations and the bank’s President’s Office once stood. The lobby was alive! Music, dim lights, and view of city lights through the sky-high windows.

I nestled myself into a luxe leather chair and enjoyed a savory charcuterie board and a crafted cocktail – my personal favorite was the “Savings & Loan” (cute, right?). I looked on as guests were playing shuffleboard, mingling, and relaxing. One thing I learned here was that I know far too little about Bourbon.

LeVeque Luxury

Hotel LeVeque Columbus, OH Hi, Inn Lovers! As the newbie of OHLA, this is my first contribution to the Inn Love blog, so hang with me as I share my venture into downtown Columbus to Hotel Leveque, the first Autograph Collection in Columbus, situated within the iconic Leveque Tower. Trust me, you’ll want to hear about this one!

The LeVeque Tower has always been an iconic part of the Columbus skyline, completed in 1927, it became the fifth tallest building in the world (standing ½ foot taller than the Washington Monument). Fast forward to 1975, when Katherine LeVeque took over Hotel LeVeque following her husband’s death. She then managed the day-to-day operations of the hotel, where she lived on the 41^st floor until 2011, the same year the hotel officially became a landmark.

This property’s MO is “A Beacon of Hospitality”, how fitting! From the moment I pulled up in front of the striking building I was in awe. The entryway alone is enough to take your breath away with its intricate metal working, hanging lamps, tiled flooring, painted ceilings… Oh my gosh, we haven’t even made it inside yet!

Hotel LeVeque, Columbus, OH As I walked through the lobby to the super hip front desk I couldn’t help but to look up and see the stellar light fixture in a soaring atrium. I began putting the pieces together and saw the overall theme; astrology! There were seemingly subtle notes all around me including the shimmering ever-changing constellation artwork behind the front desk pods. (Forgive my picture from Christmas, I just had to include this one of the lobby, it was so beautiful! And the tree almost reached the second floor!)

Hotel LeVeque Columbus, OH Ok, Inn Lovers, the sleeping rooms are SO fun! The rooms carried on the overall theme with ultra-modern furnishings, pops of gold and yellow, and light fixtures that mimicked the fixture in the atrium. Abstract shelfing also offered unique books, gadgets, and gizmos. After all this excitement, I could not wait to see the restaurant and lounge.

Hotel LeVeque, Columbus, OH First, I wanted to freshen up and the bathroom did not disappoint! Spacious with marble tiling throughout. And by spacious I mean you can fit at least 15 people in the shower alone. I would be remiss not to mention the toiletries by Cliff Original, which I later found out is a local company right here in Columbus!

I made my way to The Keep Liquor Bar, an overall French concept. It was dark and exciting with quite the menu for food and drink. I started with a Front St. Fizz and dabbled in a few small plates (the braised short rib was delectable!). I couldn’t help but to stay a little longer and absorb the vibe.

Eventually, I decided I needed to end this fun visit and head to bed (it was a work night after all!). However, I was surprised again! My room had gotten turndown service complete with a projected constellation on the ceiling. This night I got to fall asleep under the stars.

Columbus’ Own – The Joseph

InnLovers – I have to admit, I have been dying to tell you about one of my favorite Columbus hotels, Le Meridien Columbus, The Joseph. Located in the Short North Arts District, the Joseph has become a visual staple in the SN since it opened its doors in 2015. If you aren’t super familiar with the SN, most of the buildings max at 2-3 stories. The Joseph was one of the first tall buildings to grace High Street and it started quite a trend. Come with me as we step inside this SN trendsetter…

The Joseph is owned by the Pizzuti family, also known in Columbus for their art collection. Even if you aren’t staying at The Joseph, you can easily enjoy the space. When you walk into the lobby, art is

incorporated at nearly every turn. Over the main sitting area hangs a giant wall sculpture (probably not the right term, but I didn’t do so well in Art History class). As I sat in a meeting just last week underneath this piece, I kept thinking it looked like a bunch of small, inverted soccer balls all stuck together, and somehow it was perfect.

After you’ve entered the lobby, if you haven’t already gravitated to SOUL, the small bar tucked around the corner, then head upstairs to check out the public art collection. BUT WAIT! Don’t move too quickly up the stairs, or you might miss one of my favorite things at The Joseph. There is a motion-censored art/light fixture in the stairwell. It spins! Super cool.

Upstairs you will find a wide variety of art, from paintings to photographs. Along the back wall near the meeting space, you’ll find some super cool photos of a child, Lydie, in various Halloween costumes throughout her life as well as other pieces that were curates specifically for the hotel by 15 different artists. If you fall madly in love with any of these pieces, you can actually purchase them at the Joseph Collection.

There are so many ways to enjoy The Joseph. Hopefully, you have the opportunity to stay overnight. The rooms and the views of the Short North and Downtown Columbus are stunning. I was given the opportunity to sneak into a suite and the best part was definitely the bathroom. Look at that tub! (I’ve actually stayed at The Joseph, a little more than a year ago on our wedding night. The level of service and accommodation for special occasions is unmatched.)

Another cool feature is the introduction of the Spa Suites. No, no. This isn’t an overnight room, this is a unique type of spa experience, where guests can relax in the Spa Suite and schedule typical spa services. The spa suites available include a stone tiled rain shower, a heated mosaic tile bed among body sprayers and a large relaxation lounge. Services include massages, facials, body scrubs and specific services for men!

Still looking for ways to enjoy The Joseph? Of course, there is food. Adjacent to The Joseph is The Guild House. Like other fabulous hotel restaurants around Columbus, such as the Gallerie at the Hilton Columbus Downtown just up the street, The Guild House is not your average dining experience. Operated by Columbus Restaurateur, Cameron Mitchell, hotel guests and locals alike can enjoy a fabulous brunch on a Saturday morning or a fine dining, special occasion dinner at night. In addition to SOUL inside the lobby of the hotel, The Guild House also has a great bar that everyone should sip some bourbon in.

If you want the whole experience, I highly recommend checking in early, spending some time in a Spa Suite before a fabulous dinner and the Short North’s Gallery Hop before tucking into a wonderful night’s rest, followed by Eggs Benedict and fresh squeezed OJ. If you do, you might just see me there.

V-Day Getaway: Part II

I’ve got a treat for you, this Valentine’s Day season! Ok, I can’t take full credit, but I’ll take some for pointing you in the right direction. Conveniently sandwiching Vday 2018 is a holiday weekend. Completely caught up in work and life and missed that this weekend is President’s Day weekend? Don’t worry! There is still time to take advantage and to spend some time sharing the love this weekend. Last week was a great Part I of some fun places to spend the weekend. So there is this little town to the East of Columbus that is SO CUTE. It’s quaint, it’s walkable and it’s romantic. Even better, there are tons of great places to stay there. TJ and I went to Granville for a Saturday and picked up a fabulous cup of joe from The Village Coffee Company, strolled the famous Granville Farmer’s Market (they have a winter version!) and took a long winding stroll up to the beautiful Denison University campus. Beer fan? You can knock off multiple stops on the Columbus Ale Trail within downtown Granville and a short drive’s radius. Obviously, with so many things to do, you’ll need a place to stay. Luckily, there are TONS of options.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I’m from a small town. If I didn’t take the opportunity to showcase my neck of the woods for this V-Day season, I’d be crazy! If you’re looking for a getaway to a high-end hotel, in a small town, I’ve got you covered. Go check out the St. Paul Hotel in the heart of Wooster. Within walking distance is fantastic food at City Square Steakhouse or grab a glass of vino around the corner next door at H2 Wine Merchants . Great news – at the St. Paul Hotel, they serve you breakfast in bed. There is literally no reason to leave your room, specially if you book the Grand Suite, complete with a private hot tub. If I could convince you to leave the hotel in the morning, it might be to grab a delicious Harney & Sons tea and pastry from Tulipan Pastry & Coffee Shop before strolling the independent shops all down Market Street.

CINCINNATI: Cincinnati seems to be a city of historic hotels, let’s embrace it! Greater Cincinnati is home to not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 historic hotels. Visit the Queen City for fantastic food (still one of my favorite fine dining, foodie towns!) and check out the historic Cincinnatian Hotel or Hilton Netherland Plaza downtown, or the Golden Lamb Inn in Lebanon or the Mariemont Inn in Mariemont.

CLEVELAND: Catch a show at Hilarities, dinner at Lola and stay at the award winning Kimpton Schofield Hotel or historic Renaissance Hotel Cleveland.

COLUMBUS: See the Columbus Symphony at the historic Ohio Theater, have after-show drinks at Denmark on High in the Short North and cozy up under the stars at the all new Hotel LeVeque in the historic LeVeque tower.

DAYTON: I gave you my “must do” in Greater Dayton in last week’s post. For sure you need to check out the Blue Note Jazz Club. And have you spent time in downtown Yellow Springs yet? Get with it! It’s super hip.

TOLEDO: What do you get when you pair an historic building and a chic brand known for incorporating local flavor into major renovations? The Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel. Chilly up on the banks of the Maumee River in February? You can stay inside – grab a cocktail at R Lounge and enjoy checking out all of the art and design elements inspired by “The Glass City” or stroll along the Pedway to the Imagination Station Science Museum.

When was the last time you had a full Jazz experience? Last February, we celebrated Valentine’s Day with a trip to Miamisburg (where?? Yes!). The Blue Note Bistro & Lounge is about as authentic as you can find, specially in Ohio. The music, the food, and the atmosphere all equal love at first site.
